The Birth Order Effect on Personality: Is there a Cause or no Cause? Roxan Rivas Introduction Throughout the years, researchers have come to believe that birth order is an important factor in our lives, almost as important as gender or even genetics. This ties back to the old Nature vs Nurture theory, where it is not only our biology that defines who we are and what we do, it is a mixture of both our environment and our genes that help us develop as a whole. Whether you are an only child, a first born, last born, or somewhere in between, some researchers have found that this is important in defining your character, your values, goal orientation, and life successes. Overall, these two articles put into perspective the validity of birth order but also the general development of personalities and achievement goals within children. These two perspectives are helpful in depicting some uprising issues with both theories and will give us a holistic view on the topic. The first article communicates that birth order has an effect on personality and achievement. One of the things that these researchers noticed is that there are many differences between family designs such as social class, parental personality, and sibling size. However, they do not attempt to control this as much because they feel it takes away from the natural control of the study. Their predictions were that first born (FBs) would be more conscientious and achieving while later born (LBs) would be perceived as more liberal, agreeable, and rebellious. They collected 4 within family data sets by asking respondents to compare themselves to their siblings on various personality and achievement dimensions.
